This week Don and Kate discuss the book Cat Sense by Dr. John Bradshaw with Dr. Michael McCaw from the Veazie Veterinary Clinic. Cat Sense, published in September of 2013, is the most current summary of why cats behave the way they do and how we can better understand them and enjoy our unique relationship with them. In this first of two shows, we discuss; the long term future of the cat as a pet, the importance of early kitten socialization, how you can best prepare your kitten for adoption, multiple cats and how to make keeping multiple cats pleasant for all, singleton kittens and orphan kitten syndrome and how it effects emotional and behavioral development, the differences between cats and dogs, cat territoriality, moving homes when you live with a cat, preparing your home for a new cat, dealing with outdoor cats in a new home, understanding that "Most dogs find it easy to get along with other dogs; cats generally find other cats a challenge. Yet many of today's owners expect their cats to accept other cats without question -either when they themselves wish to get a second cat, or when they decide to move, depositing their unsuspecting cat into what another cat thinks is its territory and making sure each cat in a family has appropriate resources (attention, litter boxes, resting areas and space, food and hunting or hunting-like opportunities).
