Here at Green Acres Kennel Shop we're making May Dog Bite Prevention month. Why? Because fifty percent of all children will be bitten by a dog during their childhood. That's a statistic we want to help change.
The basic rule that always should be followed with dogs and children is - SUPERVISE AT ALL TIMES.
Consider these steps if you have a toddler in the house:
Do NOT allow a baby or toddler to hug, follow or chase the dog, or pull fur, ears or tail or enter the dogs crate or sleeping area.
Reward the dog with food treats for calm behavior around the toddler.
Give the dog a safe space where they can retreat from the child.
Anytime that a toddler is interacting with a child, an adult must have their hands on the dog.
Keep the toddler away from the dog when the dog is eating.
